Kastoria: Five Mountain Passes Set to Put Northern Greece on the Motorcycle Tourism Map

Discover the spectacular mountain landscapes, traditional villages and authentic experiences of Kastoria through five scenic motorcycle routes.

Nestled in the heart of Western Macedonia, Kastoria is preparing to strengthen its position as an attractive destination for alternative tourism, introducing five mountain passes designed to appeal to motorcycle enthusiasts and travellers seeking authentic experiences in Greece.

Through a new initiative by the Municipality of Kastoria, five mountain routes – Oxya, Polykerasos, Aposkepos, Verno and Kleisoura – are being highlighted as distinctive destinations for motorcycle tourism. The project is supported by Yamaha, which is sponsoring the construction of dedicated information signs at each location.

The initiative aims to give these mountain crossings a recognizable identity and establish them as important points on Greece’s motorcycle tourism map, attracting individual riders, motorcycle groups and organized clubs.

More importantly, the project seeks to connect these routes with the surrounding villages, natural attractions, cultural landmarks and local businesses, encouraging visitors to explore the wider region rather than simply pass through it.

Five Mountain Passes to Explore in Kastoria

The five selected locations represent some of the most interesting geographical and scenic points within the existing road network of the Municipality of Kastoria.

Each mountain pass has its own distinctive character, offering opportunities to discover the area’s natural environment, geographical features, history and cultural heritage.

The selected routes include:

  • Oxya: A mountain destination offering opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the wider region.
  • Polykerasos: One of the five designated crossings included in the new motorcycle tourism initiative.
  • Aposkepos: A scenic mountain location forming part of the area’s expanding network of motorcycle routes.
  • Verno: A mountainous destination that contributes to the exploration of Kastoria’s impressive natural landscape.
  • Kleisoura: A further point of interest connecting motorcycle travellers with the region’s mountainous surroundings and traditional settlements.

The concept goes beyond the simple recognition of individual mountain crossings. Visitors are encouraged to combine their journeys with stops in nearby villages, explore local gastronomy, discover regional products and visit cultural attractions.

Overnight stays in local accommodation are also expected to become an important part of the experience.

Modern Information Signs and Digital Navigation

An important element of the initiative is the introduction of dedicated information signs at each of the five mountain passes.

Each sign will feature the name of the location in both Greek and English, its elevation, a unique identification number, a map, geographical information and details about access routes and nearby attractions.

QR codes will provide visitors with direct access to dedicated digital information pages, allowing them to obtain additional details before or during their journey.

The initiative also предусматри the creation of a dedicated section on the official website of the Municipality of Kastoria, alongside integration into the national Motorcycle Passes and Routes information system.

Travellers will be able to access photographs, maps and route descriptions, as well as downloadable navigation files compatible with GPS devices and navigation applications.

Additional information concerning local facilities, available services, temporary road restrictions and weather conditions may also be provided, helping visitors plan their journeys more effectively.

Supporting Local Businesses and the Regional Economy

Beyond promoting motorcycle tourism, the project has a broader objective: strengthening the local economy and supporting businesses throughout the Municipality of Kastoria.

By encouraging travellers to explore the surrounding areas, the initiative aims to generate additional demand for accommodation, restaurants, fuel stations, local shops and tourism-related services.

Rather than concentrating visitor activity in a few well-known locations, the five mountain passes are intended to encourage wider geographical exploration and introduce travellers to smaller settlements that may otherwise remain outside the main tourist routes.

The region’s natural beauty, traditional architecture, local gastronomy and cultural heritage provide the foundations for a more diverse tourism experience.

The initiative also promotes responsible motorcycle travel, encouraging visitors to remain on legally designated roads, respect traffic regulations and protect the natural environment.

Yamaha’s Contribution and Integration into a National Network

The project is supported by Yamaha through a sponsorship agreement covering the construction of the five main information signs.

The sponsorship provides funding of up to €400 plus VAT per sign, reaching a total contribution of up to €2,000 plus VAT.

The Municipality of Kastoria will be responsible for obtaining the necessary approvals, transporting and installing the signs, as well as maintaining them.

The agreement establishes a five-year cooperation period, beginning with the installation of all five signs.

An additional objective is the integration of the mountain passes into Greece’s National Recognition, Recording and Promotion System for Motorcycle Passes and Routes, developed by Life Restart AMKE and managed by the Hellenic Motorcycle Federation.

Each designated location will receive its own unique registration number, helping establish a coordinated network of motorcycle destinations across the country.

Importantly, access to these routes will remain free of charge, with no additional fee imposed as a result of their inclusion in the system. The Municipality may also consider recognizing further mountain passes in the future, provided they meet the relevant requirements.

Kastoria: A Destination Worth Discovering Beyond the Summer Season

Kastoria is much more than a beautiful lakeside city. Its surrounding mountainous landscapes, traditional settlements, rich history and distinctive local culture make it an appealing destination throughout the year.

The development of motorcycle tourism adds another dimension to the region’s tourism offering, creating opportunities for visitors to discover less-explored parts of Northern Greece.

Initiatives such as this can also contribute to the wider development of rural tourism, encouraging investment in accommodation, hospitality and local services while bringing greater visibility to smaller communities.

At Buy2Greece, we believe that the true appeal of Greece extends far beyond its famous islands and coastal destinations. Its mountain villages, natural landscapes and authentic regional experiences are equally valuable elements of the country’s identity.

For those considering a holiday, a permanent residence or an investment opportunity in Greece, regions such as Kastoria offer an interesting perspective on the country’s evolving tourism landscape.
