Tzoumerka: Discover the Wild and Untamed Beauty of the Pindus Mountains

A hidden gem in northwestern Greece, where dramatic mountain landscapes, traditional stone villages, rushing rivers and centuries-old heritage come together.

Where Epirus meets Thessaly, the Pindus mountain range reveals one of its most impressive and unspoiled landscapes: Tzoumerka, also known as the Athamanian Mountains. Characterised by steep slopes, deep gorges and rugged peaks, this remarkable destination offers an authentic glimpse into the natural and cultural richness of mainland Greece.

With its highest summit, Kakarditsa, reaching an elevation of 2,429 metres, Tzoumerka remains a destination for travellers seeking tranquillity, outdoor adventure and a genuine connection with nature.

A Landscape Shaped by Water and Time

One of the most striking features of Tzoumerka is its dramatic topography. Within relatively short distances, visitors can travel from deep river valleys to dense fir forests and, eventually, to bare alpine ridges.

Over thousands of years, rainfall and melting snow have carved the mountainsides, creating an impressive network of gorges, streams and waterfalls. Much of this natural landscape is connected to two major rivers: the Arachthos to the west and the Acheloos to the east.

Water is an essential element of the region’s identity. The famous waterfalls near Theodoriana are among the most impressive in Epirus, attracting visitors throughout the year. Spring, particularly May, is an ideal time to explore them, as melting snow increases the flow of water and brings the surrounding landscape to life.

Forests, Alpine Meadows and Remarkable Biodiversity

The lower mountain slopes are covered with extensive fir forests, while higher elevations gradually give way to rocky terrain, alpine meadows and open grasslands.

During the summer months, these mountain pastures continue to support traditional livestock farming, preserving a way of life that has shaped the local communities for generations.

A significant part of the mountain range falls within the Tzoumerka, Acheloos Valley, Agrafa and Meteora National Park, an area recognised for its exceptional environmental importance.

The region is also home to rich biodiversity. In spring, wildflowers and orchids transform the mountain meadows into colourful natural landscapes. Among the area’s botanical treasures is Solenanthus albanicus, a rare plant found in the Pindus region and Albania, protected under European habitat conservation legislation.

For nature enthusiasts, hikers and wildlife lovers, Tzoumerka offers an exceptional opportunity to discover Greece’s less familiar ecological treasures.

Traditional Stone Villages and Architectural Heritage

Beyond its natural beauty, Tzoumerka is equally fascinating for its traditional settlements and architectural heritage.

Two of the region’s most characteristic villages, Syrrako and Kalarrytes, stand on opposite sides of the Kalarrytikos River gorge. Their traditional stone mansions, cobbled pathways, historic churches and old fountains reflect a prosperous past shaped by livestock farming, trade and craftsmanship.

Kalarrytes, in particular, has a long-standing reputation for its silversmithing tradition. The village is also historically associated with Sotirios Voulgaris, who later established the internationally renowned Bulgari jewellery house in Rome.

The two settlements are connected by an old walking trail that descends into the gorge before climbing towards the opposite village, offering visitors a memorable experience of the area’s landscape and heritage.

Another remarkable landmark is the historic Plaka Bridge, spanning the Arachthos River. Originally constructed in 1866, its impressive single arch extends more than 40 metres, making it one of the most important examples of traditional stone bridge architecture in the Balkans.

Following its collapse during severe flooding in February 2015, the bridge was carefully reconstructed using its original stones wherever possible. The restoration was completed in 2020 and received the Europa Nostra Award in 2021, recognising its outstanding cultural heritage conservation.

Today, the bridge once again stands as a symbol of the region’s history and resilience.

Outdoor Activities and Adventure in Every Season

Tzoumerka is an ideal destination for travellers who enjoy outdoor activities and nature-based experiences.

The Arachthos River, particularly the section below Plaka Bridge, is one of Greece’s well-known rafting destinations. Local operators organise river excursions from spring through autumn, offering routes suitable for both beginners and experienced participants.

Hiking is another popular activity, with marked trails connecting traditional villages and providing access to forests, mountain viewpoints and impressive natural formations.

For more experienced mountaineers, climbing Kakarditsa presents a rewarding challenge, particularly during the summer months when weather conditions are generally more favourable.

Villages such as Pramanta, Syrrako and Melissourgoi serve as excellent starting points for exploring the wider area, combining traditional accommodation and hospitality with convenient access to outdoor attractions.

Tzoumerka: An Authentic Destination with Growing Appeal

Tzoumerka represents a different side of Greece, far removed from the country’s familiar coastal and island destinations. Its combination of dramatic scenery, traditional architecture, outdoor recreation and strong cultural identity makes it an attractive choice for travellers looking for authentic experiences.

The area’s appeal also highlights the potential of mountain and alternative tourism in Greece. Traditional villages, nature-oriented accommodation and properties integrated into the local architectural character can contribute to sustainable tourism development while helping preserve the region’s distinctive identity.

For those interested in discovering Greece beyond its famous islands and beaches, Tzoumerka offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Pindus Mountains.

At Buy2Greece, we believe that Greece’s appeal extends far beyond its coastline. Its mountain destinations, traditional settlements and authentic landscapes offer unique opportunities for discovery, investment and a different way of experiencing the country.
