  • Buy2Greece.com – Tourism has immense capacity to generate growth says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message, delivered by Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, to the first-ever World Conference on Tourism for Development: “Tourism for Peace and Development”, in Beijing today:

I am delighted to greet all the participants of the first World Conference on Tourism for Development. I thank the Government of the People’s Republic of China for hosting this inaugural conference with the World Tourism Organization.

This is the first high-level international meeting on tourism and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the universal, integrated and transformative agenda that aims to spur actions that end poverty and build a more sustainable world over the next 15 years. Three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — Goal 8 on promoting growth and decent work, SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production, and SDG 14 on the conservation of marine resources — have targets that specifically relate to tourism.

But, tourism cuts across so many different areas of life and involves so many different economic sectors and sociocultural currents that it is connected to the entire agenda. As we begin implementation, this is a crucial moment for you, the leaders of the tourism sector, to commit to this universal agenda for people and planet.

Tourism has immense capacity to generate growth for all nations and it has proven resilient in the face of external shocks. In many least developed countries, tourism is among the top three sources of foreign exchange earnings. It is a highly effective way for many of the world’s poorest countries to take a more active part in the global economy.

When tourism is well-managed, it has tremendous capacity to create decent jobs, provide opportunities for inclusion and education, and contribute to preserving cultural heritage and the environment. Tourism also has an important role in building cross-cultural understanding and fostering peace between highly diverse communities.

Every day, more than 3 million tourists cross borders around the world. Each of them is a potential ambassador to another culture. Tourism can build bridges, dismantle preconceptions and encourage tolerance and curiosity, instead of ignorance and bias.

As we prepare to celebrate 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, I encourage you to make the best possible use of tourism to build a safer, more inclusive, more prosperous and sustainable world. I wish you a fruitful and productive conference.

  • Buy2Greece.com – Visa free travel for Turkish citizens could spell terror disasters for Europe

European countries are at a greater risk of terrorist attack now feel EU leaders with the controversial deal allowing Turkish citizens to travel across the continent without visas.

Those with intentions of causing disturbance will seek Turkish passports according to a European commission report to reach continental Europe as soon as the visa waiver program comes into force.

Sir Richard Dearlove, the former head of MI6, warned that giving Turkey visa-free travel opportunity is perverse and has compared it to “storing gasoline next to the fire”. He also added that EU will face “populist uprising” if it fails to control migration.

The biometric passports from the end of June will allow 75 million Turkish citizens to enter the Schengen zone for up to 90 days at a time. This decision was part of a hastily assembled deal broken by Brussels to halt the flow of migrants from Turkey to Greece.

However, the European Commission report acknowledges the “increased mobility into the Schengen area of criminals and terrorists who are citizens of Turkey, or who are foreigners based in Turkey.”

Visa free travel deals have been allowed by The EC with Kosovo, Ukraine and Georgia, all these regions are known for their organised crime.

The EU report states, “The proposed visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens travelling to the EU could potentially have an impact on the terrorist risk in the EU in as far as the movement of terrorists of Turkish citizenship to and from the Schengen area is concerned.”

The fingerprints of those who will enter Europe with a visa will be logged in a single database that can be searched by counter terrorism investigators but the deal has removed this extra level of security.

There are speculations that undetected entry from Kosovo which produced 300 fighters in Syria and Iraq and have joined terrorist networks

Kosovo is considered as a high level corrupted crime zone. The breakaway Siberian province also has the dubious distinction of producing the most jihadist terrorists per capita than any other European state. According to EC reports “Visa liberalization could also have an impact on undetected entry into the EU of persons from Kosovo who return from war zones where they had joined terrorist networks.” The destination is known for drug trafficking, facilitation in irregular migration, corruption, money-laundering and fraud, trafficking in human beings, the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons and returning foreign terrorist fighters.

Turkish authorities will be issuing reforms for the Turkish police, judiciary and counter-terrorism apparatus that are pre-condition of the visa deal that will help to mitigate the risk. Training will be imparted on ethical codes of anti-corruption warning the officials that they have to be very cautious while issuing the passport and citizenship papers as they could be sought after by terrorists. As there are high chances that as soon as Turkish citizens will obtain visa-free entry to the EU foreign nationals will obtain Turkish passports and pretend to be Turkish citizens to enter EU visa free by obtaining fraud Turkish citizenship for nefarious operations.

A European Commission spokesperson said that 2,525,000 biometric passports required for travel to the EU had been issued by Kosovo, Georgia and Ukraine and none by Turkey so far.

According to the latest report from the China National Tourism Administration, Chinese investment in tourism will reach a zenith of 2 trillion Yuan ($306 billion) by 2020. If reports are to be trusted, the present year, is expected to experience a hit of 1.25 trillion Yuan in the tourism investment sector.

The fulcrum areas of its hope lies in areas like travel to propel growth amid signs of weaknesses in many areas of the economy. This accelerating promises rewards for firms like travel agent Ctrip.com International Ltd, hotelier Shanghai Jinjiang International Travel, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and developer Dalian Wanda Group. • Buy2Greece.com – Top 10 European Cities Searched by Chinese Buyers

    Europe

Elsewhere in Europe, notwithstanding the UK, Chinese buyers have increasingly shown interest in newer emerging markets – even in far-flung reaches of Europe, such as Russia.

With the Chinese yuan staying strong against the Euro, we foresee Chinese investor interest to remain strong in Europe. Here are the 10 cities receiving much Chinese love lately.

Berlin (Germany) held steady at the top, while Paris (France) and Athens (Greece) both rose by one spot in rankings to claim the second and third spots.

Big jumpers were Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Valencia (Spain), who both leapt three spots to be fourth and fifth on the list. Meanwhile, Barcelona (Spain) dropped two places to take the seventh spot, while Monaco rose slightly to take the sixth spot.

Interestingly, former second-placed Pasphos (Cyprus) completely slid off the list, as well as former #6 Makarska (Croatia) and former #10 Ayia Napa (Cyprus). These cities were replaced by newcomers Vienna (Austria), Lisbon (Portugal), and Kabanskiy Rayon (Russia).

  • www.Buy2Greece.com – Check out who are listed among the top airports in the World!

Insight released today by global travel search engine Skyscanner reveals the top airports that travellers are choosing to self-connect through, with Dublin, Los Angeles’ LAX and Singapore’s Changi airport topping the list for their respective regions.

Self-connect passengers are those who build their own itinerary, travelling on two separate tickets often with different carriers to save money or for stop-over tourism.

Top Airports for Self-connect Bookings by Region

Region Top Airport % of seats booked to airport as part of self-connect trip
    Europe DUB 28
    Americas LAX 33
    Asia SIN 17

The US and Europe are better known for the prevalence of low cost carriers, a key facilitator of self-connections, and both Dublin and LAX will be pleased to see that they represent popular choices for passengers pursuing this option.  While the development of budget airlines in Asia has been slower, Singapore’s Changi is fast becoming a popular self-connection point, something which will no doubt increase in years to come as discount carriers gain a stronger presence in the region.

The data shows that self-connections are on the rise, with the average percentage of users choosing to self-connect over taking a flight route with a single carrier last year increasing to 12.6%, up from 11.6% the year previously.

The analysis is based on data collected from the search engine’s 50 million monthly users searching for flights, and is accompanied with an Infographic report breaking down the top self-connect airports by region.

Hugh Aitken, Commercial Director at Skyscanner commented, “In the age of the savvy traveller, and with the growth of low cost carriers, an increasing number of passengers are more aware of their options, choosing to self-connect their travel as a result. For both airports and airlines, having a full picture of the searches and bookings passengers are making, including their preferences for connections, routes and pricing, is essential if they are to capitalise on the market.”

The analysis of self-connections was based on data produced by Skyscanner’s cutting-edge Travel Insight tool. The data crunching tool, developed by Skyscanner’s dedicated B2B Unit Skyscanner for Business, allows businesses to learn key insights from the travel planning process of their potential flight customers from the global search data captured through the metasearch engine’s 50 million monthly visitors.

  • www.Buy2Greece.com -China Business Travel Market Overtakes United States as Global Leader in Business Travel Spend

China’s business travel market has overtaken the United States as the number one business travel market in the world. This is one of the key findings from the GBTA BTI™ Outlook – China 2016 H1, a report by the GBTA Foundation, the education and research arm of the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), sponsored by Visa, Inc.

Revised figures in this new report from the GBTA Foundation show China edged past the United States in total business travel spending at the end of 2015 by a billion U.S. dollars, finishing the year with $291.2 billion in spend compared to $290.2 billion respectively.* China will soar ahead in 2016 with business travel spend forecast to grow 10.1 percent to $320.7 billion USD, compared to 1.9 percent growth in the United States and $295.7 billion USD in total business travel spend.

“Despite a relative slowdown, China’s business travel market remains one of the fastest growing in the world,” said Michael W. McCormick, GBTA executive director and COO. “China surpassing the United States in business travel spending marks a major inflection point and truly demonstrates the global nature of today’s economy.”

Additional key findings from GBTA BTI™ Outlook – China 2016 H1 include:

    • Early 2016 volatility in China’s financial markets once again led to heightened concerns about a potential hard landing for China resulting in collateral damage to the global economy, but a steady stream of indicators continue to point towards controlled growth moderation as planned.
    • GBTA’s expectations for the Chinese economy are for a continuation of GDP growth moderation bringing rates of 6.4 percent and 6.1 percent for 2016 and 2017, respectively. Growth will continue to come primarily from consumption and purposeful government infrastructure investment as China works to shift its economy to one driven by consumers, not just investment and exports.
    • Despite the slowing Chinese economy, investment in travel infrastructure continues in anticipation of better days ahead for both business and leisure travel. A plan to open 82 new airports has been underway since 2011 and hoteliers are also continuing to increase their presence in China. Over 70 percent of the hotel construction pipeline in Asia Pacific can be attributed to China.
    • Business travel spend in China continues to be dominated by domestic business travel, which comprises 95 percent of total business travel spend. Pressure from slower economic expansion will keep a lid on the tremendous levels of domestic business travel growth seen in previous years, but growth of roughly 10 percent is still expected on an annual basis over 2016 and 2017.
    • GBTA’s forecast of 9.8 percent total business travel spend growth in 2017 would mark the first year of this millennium that China’s business travel spend growth rates dropped below double digits.

“This is an exciting milestone for the travel industry,” said David Henstock, VP of Global Commercial Solutions at Visa, Inc. “This highlights the need for consistent, integrated and truly global payment solutions for business travelers around the globe.”

  • www.Buy2Greece.com – Top Ten Critical Vacation Rental Booking Questions

So, what are the essential questions you should have answers to before you book your vacation home for the holidays?

    1. What are the extra supplies that you will need to carry with you?

First time renters – beware. There are a lot of extra things that you will have to carry with you. Some of them are shampoo, other personal products, cereal etc. What comes along with the rental property depends on the vacation home owner, so don’t take anything for granted. And yes, carry extra toilet paper because you never know what is going to be provided or not. Just to be on the safe side, however, keep a box ready with a few essential items and either carry it with you or have it shipped there after informing the property owner.

    2. How should you get the keys from the home renter?

Many people face difficulties simply because of miscommunication with their vacation home renters. You don’t want to be stuck on the doorstep waiting for the home owner to return home and unlock the door for you. So, either keep them properly informed about your ETA or arrange to pick up the keys from a lock box and have the combination sent to your mobile phone.

    3. How to locate the property?

Make sure the home owner sends you the exact location of the rental property via Google Maps, just so you know exactly how to get there in the event that you can’t find the place and get lost. Also, use Google Earth to check out exactly where that property is situated so you won’t get fooled about ‘beachfront’ properties that are miles from the beach.

    4. Who should you call when something stops working?

Just like how you always have emergency contacts stored in your mobile in case something breaks at home or just stops working, you need to have an emergency contact for your rental home as well. Make sure you get the phone numbers from the property owner before you arrive.

    5. Does the property get satisfactory cell reception?

Now, for those vacation goers who want to get away from the buzz of the city and all the demands that come with it, this question might not seem so important. But, trust us, when you face an emergency of any kind, especially medical, you will curse yourself for not having asked the owner about this.

    6. What exactly is the cancellation policy for the vacation home?

Always be sure that you find out about the home owner’s cancellation policy because life is uncertain and any number of unexpected things like sudden illnesses, extreme weather conditions or work demands could happen causing you to cancel your rental plans.

    7. Does the house face problems due to insects and bugs?

This is extremely important to find out about, especially if you are a city dweller. You don’t want to come all the way to your vacation home in the countryside only to find the place surrounded by bugs or squirrels or critters! If these are found roaming about very commonly, you will need the number of a handyman or pest control service on speed dial.

    8. When was the last time the vacation house was cleaned thoroughly?

Does this seem a bit weird to ask about? It might make you feel a little awkward to ask the home owner such questions but you absolutely need to. You don’t want to end up at your vacation house only to find it needing a good dusting and a whole lot of scrubbing.

    9. Is there any clean up required before departure?

Make sure whatever clean up that you are required to do is clearly mentioned in the rental agreement. In some cases, the vacation home renter can be penalized for not cleaning the place up and may have to pay additional fees.

    10. What are the complete fees included in the rental?

Most home owners will ask for a security deposit from renters before giving them the keys to the vacation home. Be sure to find out about the refund policy and if any deductions will be made for damage of property. Also, find out about additional fees like cleaning and maintenance.

Tips to Avoid Vacation Rental Scams

One thing you should keep in mind is to never rent a vacation home from a non-reputable website. Make sure you check the website for genuine customer reviews, ask around about the reputation of the website and check whether the website has a long online presence. Always read the reviews before booking a vacation home through a website. Many times, the website will have beautiful pictures and tempting descriptions but only real reviews from past visitors will let you know if you’re in for the real deal or not. Never ever wire cash to your vacation home owner because this is a well-known scam and many people are known to get taken in by fraudsters.

So, make sure to ask these 10 questions if you intend renting a vacation home. It is important to ask these questions to keep nasty surprises at bay, and ensure you have a wonderful and memorable vacation with your loved ones.

  • www.Buy2Greece.com – What are the top 5 sustainable travel destinations for 2016?

The world’s changing fast. The climate is warming. Wildlife migration patterns are changing. Some of our natural resources are dwindling. And sometimes it feels like the people with power have no interest in doing anything about it. Sometimes, it seems, the rest of us – those without a lot of political or philanthropic sway, but who do want to do something about it – are powerless to stem the literal rising tide of ecological disaster.

But it’s important to know that we’re not powerless – and every little thing we do, no matter how seemingly small, can and does help. Whether it’s recycling cans and bottles in your own community, or participating in fundraisers, or even spreading awareness of environmental news on social media – if we all pitch in, all those “little things” can add up to a whole lot of momentum.

Probably the most impactful way you can show your support for the environment is with your wallet. Buying fair trade and organic food supplies, reclaimed or recycled furniture and toiletries, and clothing made with sustainably farmed and manufactured materials are all ways you can make a difference.

You can also help protect the environment while traveling (for fun!), without needing to participate in a volunteer program, to some of the world’s many sustainable travel destinations? You can indeed have an amazing vacation in an exotic locale and do it responsibly, sustainably, and in a way that supports local conservation and education initiatives. Every year our favorite sustainable travel destinations change, but here’s our list of the top 5 destinations (in no particular order) for 2016!

Happy travels, and we hope you have a fun and responsible journey!

    Botswana

This growing African country played second fiddle to the likes of Kenya and South Africa for decades, but in the last few years, it’s quickly grown into one of the world’s most popular safari destinations. That’s because a Botswana safari is a true wildlife lover’s paradise, as the country boasts more protected and endangered animals in their natural habitat than any other country on the continent. It’s also extremely ecologically diverse – from enormous red sand deserts to lush and watery deltas, Botswana’s geography will constantly keep you on your toes.

This year, Botswana is celebrating 50 years of independence. Within those 5 decades it has progressed from a wild, impoverished country into a thriving, economically stable, politically progressive, and conservationally-focused society that concentrates resources on the development of its infrastructure alongside the protection of its natural environment.

In fact, over 17% of the country is protected as National Park land, and your tourism dollars get funneled directly into conservation programs therein. The famed Okavango Delta became UNESCO’s 1,000th World Heritage site in 2014, and is a major focus of wildlife rehabilitation initiatives in the country. A major 2015 initiative helped rehome over 100 endangered rhino from South Africa through a program called “Rhinos Without Borders” – the rhino were at high risk of poaching, and the undertaking was the largest of its kind, but every rhino was successfully rehomed and they are now protected in Botswana’s huge (and extremely poacher-unfriendly) parks.

    Palau

The stunning Pacific island nation of Palau is one of the world’s foremost snorkelling and diving destinations – and it’s fighting to stay that way!

The President of Palau – Tommy Remengesau Jr. – famously stated in a 2014 UN oceans conference that “The economy is our environment and the environment is our economy.” He said this on the eve of his declaration that 100% of his nation’s territorial waters would become a marine sanctuary – there would be no commercial fishing tolerated in any of Palau’s waters. No other nation has a 100% protected marine ecosystem. This decree came just a few years after Remengesau created an enormous shark sanctuary in those same waters.

Since Palau’s waters became protected conservation territory, they have come to be known colloquially as the “Serengeti of the Sea.” The sanctuary itself is roughly the size of Texas.

The nutrient-rich waters are home to countless beautiful and exotice marine wildlife, and for this reason there are few places in the world more thrilling and wondrous to.dive or snorkel. Some proceeds from a Palau snorkeling expedition go to protect the ocean habitat.

    Uruguay

When it comes to environmental protection and conservation, few countries are as forward-thinking as Uruguay. The nation has fully embraced the idea and implementation of green energy. In fact, they have some of the most progressive green energy policies in the world – 21 wind farms were in development at the beginning of 2014, and the country’s environmental cabinet made a goal back in 2005 to have 90% of the country’s electricity come from renewable sources by 2015; instead, they actually hit 95%.

The country hasn’t always been this way. As recently as 15 years ago oil made up almost 30% of the country’s imports, and a gas pipeline between Uruguay and Argentina was under construction. The turnaround has been fast, dramatic, and effective. The country has made a commitment to green policies rarely seen in the modern world, and any travel dollars spent there will inevitably make its way back to green development in some way.

If that’s not enough to tantalize you, Uruguay is home to several beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it also earned extremely high scores from Freedom House in the categories of Political Rights and Civil Liberties.

    Greenland

Greenland is home to the world’s smallest population density, but a comparatively high concentration of wildlife. Polar bears, humpback whales, musk oxen, sea eagles, walruses, and reindeer all call this vast and untamed wilderness home. And while the human population is relatively sparse, there are plenty of Greenland safaris you can undertake!

As for sustainability, Greenland is big on climate change. Global warming is a huge concern for Greenland, as they stand to see waters rise as much as 20 feet if warming goes unchecked. Therefore, the country’s scientists are working hard researching the problem and trying to come up with ways to reverse or at least slow climate change. Greenland doesn’t have a huge tourism income – they’re not the flashiest, trendiest country to visit, after all – so your tourism dollars make a big difference in funding environmental research.

Another cool thing about Greenland: the country’s tourism board encourages travellers to experience Greenland “like a local”, even going so far as to suggest tourists actually stay in local homes and eat dinner with their hosts. Part of this is due to the fact that the island has very little agriculture and public transportation, so eating locally and spending time touring local hotspots is almost a necessity.

    Klemtu, British Columbia

Located in the Great Bear Rainforest in the northwest coast of British Columbia, Klemtu is a small Kitasoo First Nation community you can only access by boat or plane. The community focuses on natural and cultural tourism, with a conservation model of international significance with the community’s Spirit Bear Lodge playing a central role in the conservation economy.

Kitasoo “Spirit bears” are fascinating animals that for the most part do not exist outside of the Klemtu island. Kitasoo spirit bears are white-colored black bears – but it’s not albinism that gives them a beautiful and ghostly (hence the name) coat, but a rare recessive gene. Isolated from mainland black bears, Kitasoo spirit bears keep their white-furred genes in the family.
