Greece tourism strong despite economic void
Greece tourism strong despite economic void
Published on : Wednesday, June 24, 2015
While Greece continues to sink in economic void the tourism industry of the country remains completely detached from its current crisis. The country is enjoying healthy flow in tourism as tourists remain unaffected by the country’s current economic status where hundreds of billions of Euros need to be repayed taken as loan to pay off debts. The country has suffered a complete economic collapse with fear of local banks shutting down due to the lack of funds. The country has seen a major growth in tourism in 2013 and 2014 according to a report published by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Despite Greece plummeting into economic deluge tourism increased in the country. Tourist spending which is desperately needed at this stage is greatly helping the country’s economy to sustain. According to a forecast of WTTC Greece has ranked 33 out of the 184 countries for visitor export growth in 2015.
Many tourists are visiting Greece just to help the country in its crisis. Overall GDP would grow to 3.2 per cent in 2015 for Greece according to WTTC which is of course below the global average growth but still ahead of several competitor destinations around the Mediterranean region. Tourists visiting cities, ports and islands rose by 17.9 million in 2013 and 22 million in 2014 and revenue from tourism grew over 10 per cent which would be nearly $15 million. In 2015 there has been an uptick in reservations in the first five months as compared to the same time in 2014.Even though tour operators feel that Greece bookings are slightly behind the rest of the globe but there is a flow.
Cruise businesses said that cruise lines will continue to stop at Greece ports as planned. But even as the flow of tourists continues to run there may be problems with its infrastructure which may face the risk of coping up with the high demand of tourism. Greece is also nearing the closure of it bailout program just when the peak tourist season is about to start. The country will have to make substantial paybacks to its creditors.

Aegean First Half 2015 Passenger Traffic Results
Published on : Thursday, July 23, 2015
AEGEAN announces total passenger growth of 15% for the first half 2015. Passengers carried reached 4,962,537, i.e. 630.000 more compared to the same period in 2014.International traffic rose by 20% to 2,407,107 passengers, with AEGEAN welcoming onboard 400.000 more passengers compared to last year. AEGEAN’s 20% international traffic growth outpaced the overall rate of tourism air arrivals to the country for the period of 6.7%, by a factor of 3. This performance gives further evidence to the Company’s leading contribution to the development of the country’s tourism sector despite the unique conditions and challenges of the recent weeks and months.
AEGEAN FIRST HALF 2015 PASSENGER TRAFFIC JANUARY – JUNE 2015 JANUARY – JUNE 2014 % Change Domestic passengers 2,555,430 2,321,176 10% International passengers 2,407,107 2,011,346 20% Total passengers 4,962,537 4,332,522 15% Traffic from/to Athens International passengers from/to Athens 1,713,310 1,359,224 26% Total passengers from/to Athens 3,890,685 3,335,115 17% AEGEAN’s first half performance is the result of the company’s significant investment in fleet expansion with 7 additional aircraft, adding 16 new destinations to 9 countries as well as increasing frequencies to existing destinations. Increased capacity was invested mainly in Athens but also in the regional bases around the country, with AEGEAN flights reaching 134 destinations to 45 countries.
AEGEAN has taken delivery of 3 brand new A320ceos indeed, during the last days of June and early July, despite the unique challenges posed by the capital controls recently imposed in Greece. The company has therefore demonstrated its commitment and ability, even in adversity, to further upgrade its capacity and quality of service. The 3 new aircraft deliveries are part of a total 7 Airbus aircraft order valued at 300m USD, scheduled to be completed by March 2016.
The company’s hub and main base Athens continued to grow faster with 26% more international passengers, driven by additional frequencies to traditional main source markets like France, Italy, Switzerland as well as new routes launched, like Oslo, Helsinki, Dubrovnik, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Yerevan, Alexandria. During the following weeks Riyadh, and Teheran, will be launched as well contributing to increased traffic from the Middle East.
Mr. Dimitris Gerogiannis, Managing Director, commented: “During the first half of 2015 and despite unique challenges we have proven our resilience and ability to contribute materially and consistently to Greek tourism by delivering a strong 20% growth in international traffic. Investment in New aircraft, New Routes, New Services all aimed to expand our ability to compete in quality and efficiency and grow within a challenging environment.
It should be noted during the last three weeks and since the imposition of capital controls we were initially faced with a significant loss in net bookings for both domestic and international travel for July onwards. We responded immediately with fare offerings, despite being in peak season, and with significant cost to our yields. Our effective response, albeit costly, combined with the promise of gradual return to normality evident during the last few days have borne fruit. Indeed, for the first half of July we have achieved a 30% increase in our international traffic to Athens, equal to the additional capacity we have invested. Using offers, we have even managed to have marginal growth in domestic traffic which was even more severely affected. Naturally further normalization of conditions is required to keep the positive dynamic we now experience”.

www.buy2greece.com-Tourism sector struggles to fill up vacancies
In the lead up the World Tourism Day this coming Sunday the 27th, CV-Library, the UK’s largest independent job board, has examined the state of the industry. Statistics reveal that whilst August 2015 has seen a significant rise in tourism jobs when compared with August 2014, application rates have failed to maintain the same growth, resulting in dwindling candidate choice for businesses.
Latest figures from the job site’s database have highlighted that job postings in the tourism industry have risen by 40.9% in the last year. Despite impressive job growth across the nation, the number of job hunters applying for roles in the sector has failed to maintain pace, resulting in an overall deficit of 11.33% in terms of the number of applications per role.
This is concerning news for businesses. Whilst a tourism job could expect to receive 23 candidates per vacancy in August 2014, comparable data for August 2015 shows that this number has reduced to 20, meaning organisations have less choice during the selection process.
“The tourism industry is falling victim to a growing trend,” says Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, “as jobs are on the rise, applicants can afford to be more selective in their job search. With the recent decline in applications per role it’s clear that businesses need to become savvier at attracting new talent to their organisations.”
“A recent survey revealed that 93.8% of tourism professionals consider training opportunities ‘very important’ when looking for a new job. By adapting recruitment strategies, such as communicating a robust training and development programme in job openings, tourism organisations attract more qualified candidates to vacancies and ultimately increase application rates.”
The good news is CV-Library has over 174,594 job hunters seeking tourism work, meaning there are plenty of candidates available to fill roles.

www.Buy2Greece.com – Travel smart, travel safe to help tourism defeat terrorism!
The unscrupulous activities by the terrorist groups all over the world are resulting in a huge blow to the global tourism sector substantially. The world tourism body, UNWTO strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Bangkok. UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai in a statement said, “These are direct attacks on the livelihood of the Thai people and their economy which is strongly linked with tourism. We stand by the Government and the people of Thailand in supporting its tourism sector as a vital pillar of the well being of Thai people.”
The truth about the terrorism activities pronounce the fact that anything can happen anywhere in the world. Be it the shooting and explosion at the touristy Dolmabahce palace in Istanbul, the bombing at the Erawan shrine and in the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, or the mass shootings on the shores of Mediterranean at a beach resort in Tunisia. Paris, Nairobi and many other popular destinations of the world have witnessed the burns of cruel and gruesome terror attacks.Global travelers are striving hard to find a way to avoid such ill-fated incidents but there is hardly any full-proof plan. However, as a smart traveler, one should be able to gauge the political condition of a country before planning a trip. People in New York might be afraid of traveling to Paris, but even their own city witnessed the dreadful 9/11 incident.
Taleb Rifai in his statement about the recent Bangkok attack added, “Terrorism is a global threat impacting our societies, taking the lives of innocent people around the world and aiming to destroy our economies and our way of life. Thailand has a long tradition of being a hospitable and welcoming country and we fully believe it will continue to be so.”
In a debate against the thought of avoiding travel, one can imagine how that will encourage the terrorists even more. Travel agencies are advising travelers to plan their trips smartly and keep a track of the odds before traveling. It is observed, while it’s always a good idea to register your trip abroad with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. It becomes all the more important if you’re heading to an area where you’re worried about terrorism or unrest.
For travelers who book independently, it is for them that the travel leaders worldwide are suggesting travelers to book their trips through a travel advisor. This may be one of the situations in which it could be beneficial to have a trusted travel agent help you plan your trip, rather than simply booking yourself online. A travel advisor can be an advocate you can turn to in a time of crisis when you’re far from home.
To conclude, a traveler must remember that the odds are always in their favor and they can hardly defy the destiny. In 2014, 24 private-sector U.S. citizens overseas were killed as result of terrorism. However, the fatalities were in places where people will hardly go for a holiday, like Syria and Afghanistan.
